HPCQS Project Team Meets at TGCC in France for 3rd Progress Meeting
On October 16, 2024 our consortium gathered for the 3rd HPCQS Progress Meeting hosted by CEA at the Très Grand Centre de Calcul (TGCC) in Bruyères-le-Châtel, France, also offering the opportunity to take part online for those project members who could not be on site. This highly anticipated get-together convened the partners to review progress, discuss links between work packages and outline the next steps for the upcoming final phase of the project.
A Day of Progress and Collaboration
The hybrid meeting commenced with a warm welcome and a brief overview of the project's status by our coordinator Kristel Michielsen from Jülich Supercomputing Centre (JSC). This set the tone for the day, as each work package lead presented updates on their contributions. Key highlights included:
- WP1: Update on project management and scientific coordination
- WP2: Insights into the Pasqal quantum simulator deliveries to TGCC and JSC incl. their commissioning
- WP3 & WP4: Updates on infrastructure software and programming technologies
- WP5: Discussions on demonstrators and user engagement alongside impactful use-case presentations
- WP6: Strategies for dissemination, communication and exploitation, ensuring HPCQS’ visibility and impact
The day also featured a productive cross-work package workshop co-organised by GENCI, ParTec, EVIDEN and ICHEC, fostering collaboration across teams.
Highlight: TGCC Tour and Pasqal Quantum Processor
A key moment of the event was a tour of the TGCC supercomputing centre at the end of the meeting day, where participants had the chance to witness first-hand the newly installed Orion quantum processor from Pasqal. This groundbreaking 100+ qubit simulator, delivered just months prior, represents a significant milestone in the HPCQS project. Attendees expressed enthusiasm and anticipation as they got to experience the fusion of quantum and classical computing technologies.
Looking Ahead
The 3rd Progress Meeting underscored our commitment to innovation and collaboration. As 2025 approaches, the HPCQS team looks forward to making the envisioned HPC-QS infrastructure for Europe a success and showcasing the hybrid platform's potential.
