HPCQS At SC24 In Atlanta: Between Supercomputing, AI And Quantum Innovation
The Supercomputing Conference 2024 (SC24), held at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta from November 17 to 22, 2024, set new records with 18,000 attendees, marking a 28% increase compared to last year. The event served as a global hub for advancements in supercomputing, artificial intelligence, and quantum technologies, with HPCQS playing a significant role in this vibrant gathering.
Active Participation from HPCQS Members
HPCQS consortium partners were prominently represented across various activities at SC24. Our coordinating institution Jülich Supercomputing Centre (JSC) was present with the HPCQS project coordinator and Head of Quantum Computing at JSC, Kristel Michielsen and the Head of JSC, Thomas Lippert. Partners from other institutions further enriched HPCQS' presence: Venkatesh Kannan from ICHEC honoured outstanding achievements in supercomputing as Awards Vice Chair at SC24. Stephane Requena (GENCI) and Thomas Moschny as well as Simon Pickartz (both ParTec) were available to visitors of SC24 as experts and provided information about their work.
Highlights at Partner Booths
The HPCQS project and our latest advancements were showcased at several partner booths, including those of EuroHPC JU and JSC, with the latter launching its brand new booth at SC24 under the motto ‘Unleashing Next-Gen Computing Power’. Sebastian Schulz and Orkun Şensebat from the Jülich UNified Infrastructure for Quantum computing (JUNIQ) demonstrated the D-Wave quantum annealer JUPSI at the JSC stand. Also, they informed visitors about JSC's quantum computing strategy, including the contributions made by JUNIQ, HPCQS and our co-operation partner Pasqal. The latter accepted the invitation to perform demonstrations of its quantum simulator recently delivered to HPCQS at the JSC booth. Under the title ‘Drug Discovery with Quantum Machine Learning on a Neutral-Atom platform’, Jenna Yahaya presented the benefits of the Pasqal Orion system for the development of new drugs. Conference participants were able to gain even more insights into the Pasqal product range at the full-stack quantum computing company's own stand. Project partners such as CEA, ICHEC, ParTec, BSC, CINECA and EVIDEN also took the opportunity to present their latest scientific and business successes in the field of supercomputing and quantum computing to the 18,000 trade visitors at their own booths.
Driving Innovation Forward
Our involvement at SC24 highlighted our commitment to pushing the boundaries of high-performance and quantum computing. As we advance towards a future of unparalleled computational capabilities, HPCQS is proud to be driving innovation across the European HPC-QC ecosystem, following the recent milestones we have achieved with the delivery and commissioning of the Pasqal quantum simulators as part of our project.
